The College of Education offers degrees
leading to many possible careers. A student can qualify as a
pre-primary school, primary school or secondary school teacher, or
can be fully trained as trainer of people in the workplace or as an
adult basic education trainer. Students who are already qualified
teachers can improve their qualifications by taking one of our
further training programs to become a specialist either in a
sought-after school subject, or in a particular field.
The certificate programs offered by the
Unit for Training and Development and the Unit for Community
Development provide specific, practically oriented non-degree
training that might grant a candidate university admission. These
courses cover a wide range of subjects including reception-year
teaching, student development, environmental education, and career
guidance, parent involvement, counseling, mediation and divorce
mediation. We have more to offer than just undergraduate study. Once
students have obtained a degree in the Faculty, they may register
for a BEd degree or a postgraduate diploma. If a teacher has an M+3
qualification she/he may register for a Further Diploma in Education
(FDE). After passing a BEd degree or Diploma in Tertiary Education,
students may register for a master’s degree for which they have to
submit a dissertation. On completing the master’s degree, the next
step is a doctoral thesis, which represents the highest rung of the
academic ladder. The Institute for Educational Research can support
students with their master’s and doctoral studies. The Faculty of
Education has highly qualified staff members from various cultural
backgrounds who each bring a unique perspective to the teacher
training programs that are aimed at various South African
educational situations. Our lecturers are skilled in the various
fields of professional training as educationalists and teachers and
constantly undergo further training through staff development
programs.
